Amazon Workers Prepare to Strike Over Contract Dispute Ahead of Christmas

Thousands of Amazon workers are set to strike starting Thursday, just days before Christmas, in response to the company's refusal to enter negotiations over a new contract. Union locals across the United States are preparing picket lines and demonstrations at various Amazon facilities.

The strike follows Amazon's failure to meet a December 15 deadline to open talks with workers at the JFK8 warehouse in Staten Island, which made history in 2022 as the first Amazon facility in the U.S. to vote to unionize. The union representing workers, the Teamsters, has mobilized its members, and several other Amazon sites, including locations in New York, California, Illinois, and Georgia, have authorized strikes or are considering action.

Teamsters Local 299 in Detroit announced strike shifts at an Amazon facility in the metro area on December 19 and 20, calling for solidarity with workers at the Staten Island facility. A flyer from Teamsters Local 206 in Portland, Oregon, similarly announced picket actions for Thursday and Friday, citing Amazon's refusal to recognize or bargain with the union at its facilities.

In a statement, Teamsters General President Sean O'Brien expressed outrage at Amazon’s behavior, accusing the company of exploiting workers and pushing them to the breaking point. "Amazon rakes in more money than anybody, they subject workers to injury and abuse, and they illegally claim not to be the rightful employer of nearly half their workforce," O’Brien said. "This rigged system cannot continue. Amazon must be held accountable."

Amazon, however, has strongly criticized the Teamsters, accusing the union of using illegal tactics to coerce employees and third-party drivers to join their cause. Company spokesperson Eileen Hands stated that the union’s actions were the subject of multiple pending unfair labor practice charges.

The impending strike could cause significant disruptions to Amazon's operations during one of the busiest times of the year, as workers demand better treatment and contract negotiations.
