FBI Investigates Los Angeles Deputy Mayor Over Alleged City Hall Bomb Threat

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents conducted a search at the home of Brian K. Williams, Los Angeles Deputy Mayor for Public Safety, this week as part of an investigation into a reported bomb threat against City Hall.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass’s office confirmed that she was informed of the search, which took place on Tuesday, and emphasized the gravity of the allegations. Williams has since been placed on administrative leave.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) initially responded to the bomb threat earlier this year. “Our investigation identified Brian Williams as the likely source of the threat,” LAPD stated. Due to Williams’ position within the city’s administration, the case was referred to the FBI for further investigation.

Despite the allegations, Williams has not been arrested or charged. His attorney, Dmitry Gorin, stated that Williams “strongly maintains his innocence” and intends to “vigorously fight the allegations.” Gorin added that Williams is cooperating with investigators and emphasized his client’s long-standing public service career.

Zach Seidl, spokesperson for Mayor Bass, highlighted that the LAPD’s initial investigation determined there was no immediate danger from the threat. However, given the severity of the situation, the case was escalated to federal authorities.

“The mayor takes this matter very seriously,” Seidl said. “Following the LAPD’s investigation, this matter was referred to the FBI for a thorough review.”

Williams has served as Deputy Mayor in Bass’s administration for nearly two years, focusing on police recruitment, public safety funding, and the search for a new police chief. He previously held the same role from 2001 to 2005 under then-Mayor James K. Hahn. Before his deputy mayoral roles, Williams worked as an assistant city attorney in Los Angeles.

While the investigation continues, Williams remains on leave, with Mayor Bass and city officials emphasizing the importance of maintaining public trust in the administration.
