Tabby Brown, a 45-year-old former Playboy model and ex-girlfriend of footballer Mario Balotelli, tragically passed away in October 2023 after complications from a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedure. The inquest into her death, held at South London Coroners Court, revealed that Tabby died shortly after returning from the Dominican Republic, where she underwent liposuction surgery.
Tabby, known for her appearances in magazines such as Cosmopolitan and Elle, returned to her mother’s home in south London three days after the surgery. She began feeling unwell, and her family initially believed she had contracted a viral infection during her travels.
On the night of October 13, Tabby collapsed at home, prompting an emergency call. Paramedics found her unresponsive and declared her dead at the scene. The inquest confirmed she had two puncture wounds in her pelvis, consistent with recent cosmetic surgery.
A postmortem examination revealed that her lungs contained "numerous small globules of fat," leading to a fat embolism, a rare but fatal complication associated with liposuction. Toxicology reports showed no evidence of alcohol or drugs in her system.
Tabby’s family, including her mother, brother, and sister, paid a heartfelt tribute to her during the inquest.
"Tabby was a fitness enthusiast, a passionate foodie, and an accomplished model who charmed everyone with her infectious laugh, smile, and personality," they said in a statement. "While we take solace in the years she lived out her dreams, we are deeply saddened by her untimely passing. She will always hold a special place in our hearts."
Tabby’s successful career saw her feature in music videos for prominent British and American artists, as well as starring in major advertising campaigns.
The coroner highlighted that deaths following cosmetic procedures, while rare, have risen alongside the growing popularity of liposuction. Fat embolism, as seen in Tabby’s case, occurs when fat particles enter the bloodstream and block critical blood vessels, potentially leading to fatal outcomes.
Tabby’s untimely death has drawn attention to the risks associated with medical tourism and cosmetic surgery, sparking calls for better awareness about potential complications and the importance of post-operative care.
Despite her sudden passing, Tabby’s legacy as a model, dancer, and vibrant personality lives on. Friends, family, and fans continue to celebrate her life and achievements, mourning the loss of someone who brought joy and inspiration to many.
