Jay-Z's legal team is urging a Manhattan federal court to swiftly remove the rapper from a lawsuit in which a woman accuses him and Sean "Diddy" Combs of sexually assaulting her when she was just 13 years old. The unidentified woman, who recently amended her lawsuit, alleges the assault occurred in 2000 after Combs' limo driver offered her a ride to an MTV Video Music Awards afterparty.
In a filing submitted on Wednesday, Jay-Z's attorneys pointed to a recent NBC News interview with the accuser, in which she acknowledged several inconsistencies in her account. The woman, when questioned about the details of the incident, admitted she had made "mistakes" and was uncertain about key facts, such as the time it took to reach the afterparty venue. Additionally, she conceded that she did not have any corroborating witnesses to support her claims.
Jay-Z’s legal team emphasized that the accuser’s allegations “crumble under scrutiny,” citing factual discrepancies and a lack of supporting evidence. For instance, they pointed out that a Jumbotron mentioned in her story did not exist at the time, and both Jay-Z and Combs were documented in nightclubs after the alleged assault, contradicting the claim that they were at a nearby house.
“These glaring inconsistencies, along with the absence of corroborating evidence, make the accuser's allegations wholly unreliable,” Jay-Z's legal team stated. They further criticized her lawyer, Tony Buzbee, accusing him of misconduct and a long history of abusing the legal process.
The accuser initially filed the lawsuit, accusing Combs of raping her at the afterparty, but Jay-Z was only recently added to the suit. In a separate interview with NBC, the accuser claimed she spoke with musicians Benji Madden and his brother at the party, and her father allegedly picked her up afterward. However, the Maddens’ representative clarified that the brothers were touring during the VMAs, and her father did not recall a five-hour drive home.
Jay-Z’s lawyers argue that the contradictions in her story and the failure to provide supporting evidence indicate the case is fabricated. They also expressed concern over the conduct of her lawyer, Buzbee, accusing him of unethical behavior. In response, Buzbee denied the accusations, calling the allegations "false" and dismissing the claims made in Jay-Z’s filing as "reckless and silly."
As the case continues to unfold, Jay-Z's legal team remains adamant that the lawsuit lacks merit, urging the court to dismiss the rapper from the proceedings.
