Megan Thee Stallion has filed a petition in Los Angeles Superior Court, asking a judge to issue a restraining order against Tory Lanez, who she claims continues to harass her even from prison. Lanez, serving a 10-year sentence for shooting Megan in the feet, allegedly continues to incite harassment through third parties, despite his imprisonment.
The petition, filed on Tuesday, alleges that Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, has used his connections to spread falsehoods and undermine Megan’s credibility online. This includes efforts to discredit her accusations and even claims about missing evidence in the case. According to the petition, prison call logs from Lanez at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi show that he is orchestrating these attacks, leading to repeated trauma for Megan.
Megan's legal team contends that the harassment has not stopped despite Lanez’s conviction, and the protective order issued earlier to prevent such actions is no longer in effect. Megan's legal team argues this leaves a loophole in the system that is allowing the continued victimization of the hip-hop star.
One particular individual, blogger Milagro Elizabeth Cooper, is named in the filing as being a key figure spreading the falsehoods. Cooper, who is being sued by Megan in a separate lawsuit, is accused of acting as a "puppet and mouthpiece" for Lanez. Cooper has made several controversial statements on social media, including calling Megan a “professional victim” and questioning whether Megan was even shot.
Lanez’s lawyers have not yet commented on the petition, and a hearing for the restraining order is scheduled for January 9.
Lanez was convicted in December 2022 on charges of assault with a semi-automatic firearm, having a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. His conviction followed a highly publicized trial in which Megan testified that Lanez shot at her feet after an argument following a party at Kylie Jenner's home. Lanez’s legal team has filed an appeal, and a motion for a new trial was rejected.
The case has had a significant impact both legally and culturally, drawing attention to issues of misogyny in hip-hop and the struggles of Black women to be believed and supported in cases of violence. Megan’s career has continued to flourish, winning a Grammy for Best New Artist in 2021 and achieving chart-topping singles, while Lanez’s career has faced a severe setback due to the conviction.
