A San Francisco jury has convicted Nima Momeni, a 40-year-old tech consultant, of second-degree murder in the April 2023 stabbing death of Bob Lee, the founder of Cash App. Momeni was charged with first-degree murder, but the jury opted for a lesser charge after deliberating for seven days. The conviction carries a sentence of 16 years to life in prison.
The case, which shocked the tech world and drew widespread attention, centers on the fatal encounter between Momeni and Lee, who was found bleeding and calling for help on a deserted street in downtown San Francisco on April 4, 2023. Lee, 43, was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
Initial reports of the murder sparked outrage, with tech moguls like Elon Musk criticizing San Francisco’s safety policies, accusing city leaders of fostering an environment of lawlessness and violence. As the investigation unfolded, however, a personal motive for the killing emerged, turning the case from one of random violence into a story of betrayal and revenge.
Prosecutors argued that Momeni meticulously planned the attack. They stated that he drove Lee to a remote location under the Bay Bridge, where he stabbed him three times with a kitchen knife taken from his sister’s home. The motive, they claimed, was Momeni’s anger toward Lee for introducing his younger sister, Khazar Elyassnia, to a drug dealer who allegedly assaulted her after giving her GHB and other drugs.
In his defense, Momeni testified that Lee had attacked him with a knife after a heated argument about Lee's lifestyle. Momeni, a martial artist, claimed that he acted in self-defense, asserting that he did not realize he had fatally wounded Lee or that Lee had been hurt.
As police kept details of the case under wraps, speculation ran rampant within the tech industry. Once the true nature of Momeni’s motive came to light, it became clear that the murder was rooted in personal grievances rather than random violence.
The trial, which began on October 14, concluded with the jury's decision on December 4. Momeni’s conviction brings a tragic end to the life of Lee, a prominent figure in the tech world known for founding Cash App and serving as the chief product officer of the cryptocurrency company MobileCoin. Lee had recently relocated to Miami, where he lived with his ex-wife, Krista Lee, and their two children.
