The young Miami woman who was brutally attacked by her Craigslist roommate has woken up after nearly a month in a coma.
On the night of her 23rd birthday, Danielle Jones was left fighting for her life after a roommate she found on Craigslist, Byron Mitchell, 35, allegedly strangled her and cut her up.
After spending nearly a month suffering from a brain injury and being in a coma, Jones was able to wake up and flash a smile.
She was able to laugh and give a thumbs up as her family clapped and cheered for her, according to NBC Miami.
The attack that occurred on Valentine's Day came two weeks after Mitchell had been living in Jones' Miami apartment.
Mitchell has since been charged with attempted murder.
A GoFundMe page that was set up to help Jones' family with medical bills has raised more than $30,000.
Three weeks ago Nikolov shared a video of Jones attempting to open her eyes.
The sign of improvement came as doctors at the Ryder Trauma Center worried that Jones may have suffered serious brain damage during the alleged attack.
About a week after the attack, police revealed that they uncovered information suggesting the roommates had started a relationship.
But Nikolov slammed the claims as 'ridiculous' and something her daughter's attacker had made up.
In an interview with CBS Miami, Nikolov said 'there was no relationship' and that Danielle wasn't even staying at her apartment the week Mitchell moved in - instead sleeping at her uncle's house.
One of the only interactions she knows her daughter had with Mitchell was on Valentine's Day, when he joined her and a friend in the apartment to drink wine.
At the time of her attack, she was working as an HR manager at Miami's Bison Consulting Group
Mitchell remains behind bars with no bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami and maintains his claim that he was acting in self-defense after Jones came at him with a knife.
