Reconstitution of Tertiary Institution Governing Councils: Tinubu's Approval and Key Appointments


 President Bola Tinubu has given his approval for the reconstitution of governing councils and boards of federal tertiary institutions across Nigeria. This decision was revealed in a statement issued by Nnamdi Mbaeri, the permanent secretary in the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), on Friday, June 14.

Among the appointments, Bisi Akande, former interim national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has been named as the chairman of the University of Ibadan’s governing council. Additionally, Wole Olanipekun, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) who served as Tinubu's legal counsel in the 2023 election, has been appointed as the chairman of the University of Lagos council.

Isa Yuguda, a former governor of Bauchi, will now head the National Open University’s governing council, while Siyan Oyeweso will chair Obafemi Awolowo University’s council. Adebayo Shittu has been appointed for the David Umahi University of Medicine in Ebonyi State, and Muiz Banire and Florence Ita Giwa will lead the councils of the Federal University of Transportation in Katsina state and the Federal Polytechnic in Ugep, Cross River state, respectively.

In total, 255 individuals have been appointed to serve on the governing bodies of tertiary institutions across the country.
