Suspended Yobe PHC Director Admits Diverting Therapeutic Food for Malnourished Children

Mr. Ibrahim Lawan, the Director of Primary Health Care (PHC) in Nangere Local Government of Yobe, who is currently suspended for diverting Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF), has admitted to the crime.

The Yobe State PHC Board suspended Lawan for "diverting and misusing" the food supplements.

Mr. Adamu Abba, the board’s spokesperson, announced the suspension on Wednesday in Damaturu and stated that a five-member committee had been established to investigate the matter.

In response to the allegations, Lawan admitted in an interview that he and some PHC staff had "tampered" with the therapeutic food supplements.

“Indeed, I and some of my staff tampered with some of the therapeutic food supplements, but the quantity is not as much as they are alleging. The allegation claims I diverted about 120 cartons. This is not true. However, I take responsibility for everything that happened as I was the leader at the time. I am appealing to the state government to temper justice with mercy, given my cooperation and the assistance I’ve provided in the investigation,” he said.

The PHC board, while announcing Lawan’s indefinite suspension, appointed Ibrahim Disa as the acting director of the PHC in Nangere. Disa will serve in this role pending the outcome of the investigation.

The investigation committee is also tasked with recommending strategies to ensure accountability in the distribution of the supplements and other medical consumables.

RUTF is a highly nutritious packaged food supplement used to treat severely and acutely malnourished children.
