Next week, Barack and Michelle Obama will join Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris on the campaign trail for the first time, in a push to rally voters in the final weeks before the election. According to a senior official from Harris's campaign, the former president will appear with Harris in Georgia on October 24, while Michelle Obama is set to join her in Michigan on October 26. Details regarding the specific cities and times in these crucial battleground states have yet to be announced.
This marks Michelle Obama's first time campaigning alongside Harris, and she is scheduled to headline a rally in Atlanta, Georgia, on October 29. The event will be hosted by "When We All Vote," a non-partisan civic engagement organization founded by Michelle Obama in 2018.
Barack Obama has already hit the campaign trail, recently appearing alone in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in support of Harris. The former president will continue to rally with her and is also slated to make additional appearances in Arizona and Nevada later this week, followed by events in Wisconsin and Michigan on October 22. These states are considered pivotal in the upcoming election, which could determine the outcome of the race for the White House.
Early voting has already begun in Georgia, where a record turnout has been reported. In Michigan, early voting is set to start on October 26.
The Obamas and Harris have a long-standing friendship dating back 20 years, beginning when Harris helped organize a fundraiser for Barack Obama's 2004 Senate campaign. Harris was one of the early supporters of Obama’s presidential run in 2008, backing him over Hillary Clinton during the highly competitive Democratic primaries. Obama went on to become the first Black president of the United States, and if Harris wins in November, she would make history as the first female president.
Since President Joe Biden stepped down from the race in August 2024 and endorsed Harris, Barack Obama has played a significant advisory role in her campaign.
