EFCC Raids Urban Radio 94.5FM, Arrests Presenter Over Alleged Ponzi Scheme

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) stormed Urban Radio 94.5FM in Enugu State on Monday, October 14, 2024, arresting a presenter, Favour Ekoh, during a live broadcast of the station’s "Prime Time" program.

The raid, which occurred at around 6:45 pm, interrupted the show, leaving listeners in shock. The radio station confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday, apologizing to its audience for the unexpected disruption.

Urban Radio's management expressed their displeasure over the incident, stating, "The Board and Management of Urban Radio 94.5FM, Enugu regrets the abrupt halting and disruption of our programme on Monday evening. Armed men identifying as EFCC barged into the studio, interrupted the live program ‘Prime Time,’ and forcefully abducted our presenters while seizing communication equipment, without giving any reason."

The station added that they are closely following the situation and promised to update their listeners as more information becomes available, while hoping for a speedy resolution.

However, the EFCC defended its actions, stating that the raid was conducted to arrest Ekoh over allegations of involvement in a Ponzi scheme that defrauded 103 Nigerians. EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, clarified that only Ekoh was apprehended and refuted claims that communication equipment was seized.

According to Oyewale, the EFCC had tracked the presenter to the station after she repeatedly ignored several invitations to respond to the allegations. The spokesperson emphasized that the agency was acting within its mandate and had followed proper procedure in executing the arrest.

Listeners and media observers are awaiting further developments as Urban Radio continues to investigate the situation and restore normalcy to its programming.
