Georgia Reports Record Early Voting Turnout as Election Heats Up

Georgia has set a new record for early voting turnout, with over 251,000 residents casting their ballots in person on the first day of voting for the 2024 U.S. elections. Election officials reported this milestone just hours after the polls opened on Tuesday, highlighting the high level of voter engagement in this critical battleground state.

This turnout shattered Georgia’s previous record for the first day of early voting, which stood at 133,000 from the 2020 election. Gabriel Sterling, Chief Operating Officer for the Georgia Secretary of State's office, shared the numbers on social media, calling the turnout "spectacular."

The state’s significance in the race for the White House is clear, with both candidates — Democratic contender Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican challenger Donald Trump — campaigning heavily in Georgia. The state's 16 Electoral College votes could be decisive in determining the next president.

Both Democrats and Republicans have been encouraging early voting, with high early turnout historically favoring Democratic candidates. However, Georgia remains one of several tightly contested swing states, alongside Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Arizona, where close races could swing the election either way.

In 2020, Joe Biden became the first Democrat to win Georgia in nearly three decades, a victory attributed largely to a surge in Black voter turnout. As Black voters make up about a third of the state's population, both Harris and Trump have focused their campaigns on appealing to this critical demographic. Harris has introduced policies aimed at supporting Black entrepreneurs and addressing health disparities, while Trump has sought to court Black voters by emphasizing job opportunities and criticizing Democratic policies.

As the 2024 election nears, concerns about voter suppression and election integrity continue to loom over the state. A recent court ruling in Georgia clarified that election officials must certify the results, countering claims of fraud from the 2020 race that led to Trump’s indictment on charges of trying to overturn the election outcome.

With early voting off to a record-breaking start, the high engagement in Georgia indicates a closely fought election with national implications. Election Day is set for November 5, when the final votes will be cast.
