Libyan Football Federation Faces Pressure Over AFCON Match Cancellation

The Libyan Football Federation is in a state of alarm following a request from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for documentation related to the cancellation of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match against Nigeria's Super Eagles.

The Super Eagles withdrew from the match after their flight was redirected to Labraq Airport, where they were held for more than 18 hours without access to food or water. This ordeal ultimately led to the team's decision to boycott the game and return home.

Nasser Al-Suwaie, the Secretary-General of the Libyan Football Federation, confirmed in a statement to Libya Al-Ahrar Channel that CAF has set a deadline of October 20 for both the Libyan and Nigerian football associations to submit relevant documents concerning the incident.

Al-Suwaie noted that the Libyan Federation has engaged a specialized lawyer to compile evidence for their case. He expressed concerns about potential collusion from certain factions within CAF but maintained that the Libyan Federation's position remains robust.

Additionally, Al-Suwaie emphasized that the decision to redirect the plane to Al-Abraq Airport was made by the Libyan government, asserting that the sovereignty of the Libyan state must be respected.

The Super Eagles arrived back in Nigeria on Monday after their distressing experience at the airport, marking a tumultuous chapter in the ongoing AFCON qualifying campaign.
