National Mosque in Abuja Welcomes New Imam, Prof. Ilyas Usman

The National Mosque in Abuja has announced the appointment of Professor Ilyas Usman as a new Imam. Usman, notable for being the first Professor of Arabic in Igboland, will join the existing team of Imams at the mosque.

According to Reports, Prof. Usman will work alongside the current Imams, Prof. Ibrahim Makari and Prof. Muhammad Kabir, in leading the Juma’ah and daily congregational prayers. The fourth Imam, Sheikh Ahmad Onilewura, who hails from Southwest Nigeria, has been unable to lead prayers for some time due to health issues.

With Usman's addition, the National Mosque, which has a capacity of 25,000 and was completed in 1984 before officially opening in 1991, now boasts three active Imams. Additionally, Prof. Shehu Ahmad Sai’d Galadanci serves as the Murshid, acting as the overall head, spiritual guide, and general administrator of the mosque.
