Mississippi Substitute Teacher Fired After Viral TikTok Sparks Outrage

A 24-year-old TikTok creator, Miata Borders, was fired on her first day as a substitute teacher at a Mississippi school after a video she posted went viral for what many viewers called inappropriate comments about students.

Borders, who has over 100,000 followers on TikTok, had uploaded a “day in the life” video documenting her experience inside the school — including filming herself walking through hallways, showing empty classrooms, and even capturing students during a school parade.

The controversy erupted when Borders added a voiceover, saying, “Damn, shorty, sheesh… Man, I gotta get up after these school kids tryna take me down.” The term “shorty” — often used in a flirtatious or suggestive way — immediately drew backlash from parents, teachers, and social media users who accused her of making an inappropriate remark about minors.

Critics also pointed out that Borders had violated student privacy laws by filming children without consent. One TikTok user wrote, “You didn’t realize you couldn’t record minors???? Like what??” Another said, “You can’t record someone else’s child, period…. That’s the law.”

The school district acted swiftly. DeSoto County Schools confirmed that Borders had been terminated immediately, stating:

“District officials informed Kelly Services today that the person is no longer allowed to be a substitute teacher for DeSoto County Schools.”

Following the backlash and firing, Borders posted a series of apology videos, insisting her comment was misunderstood.

“What I meant by ‘shorty’ was that the kids were shorter and younger than me. It had nothing to do with flirting,” she said.

Borders also claimed she was unaware that recording students was prohibited, explaining that the voiceover was added after she left campus. She expressed frustration over being labeled inappropriate, saying, “I’m by far no predator or anything close to it. I truly just thought I was doing some good for the youth.”
