Nigerian Police Crack Down on Rioters Amid Ongoing Protests

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, announced significant developments in the ongoing protests across Nigeria, revealing that several key figures involved in orchestrating riots have been arrested. This follows disturbances in states like Kano, Kaduna, and Zamfara, where rioters hoisted foreign flags and demanded governmental change.

Egbetokun stated that the Police have detained several sponsors of these protests, including individuals linked to foreign entities. The Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Immigration Service, Kemi Nandap, confirmed that these sponsors, identified as residing abroad, are under surveillance and will be detained upon their return to Nigeria.

In response to the unrest, service chiefs, including General Christopher Musa and Lt General Taoreed Lagbaja, have pledged to maintain order and ensure the stability of the country. They warned that the military would not tolerate any threats to national security.

The protests have notably intensified in Port Harcourt, where demonstrators have blocked major roads, including the East-West Road. In contrast, Kano State has relaxed its curfew from a 24-hour restriction to 6 am–6 pm to allow for daily activities, while Kaduna's curfew has led to a temporary lull in unrest.

Security forces in Kaduna have made several arrests, including a tailor accused of sewing foreign flags. In Kano, six Spanish nationals have been detained in connection with the protests, and numerous Russian flags were recovered.

Amidst the turmoil, Abuja has seen a decline in protest activity, largely due to government-imposed restrictions. The protests, now in their sixth day, have seen a reduction in numbers and intensity, with security forces clamping down on gatherings and enforcing curfews.

As the situation evolves, authorities continue to address the root causes of the unrest and work towards restoring stability across affected regions.
