Plateau State Governor Calls for Urgent Action on Northern Nigeria’s High Birth Rate

Governor Caleb Muftwang of Plateau State has raised a critical alarm regarding the burgeoning population in Northern Nigeria, labeling it a potential "time bomb" if not addressed promptly. Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on August 6, Muftwang highlighted the pressing need for a collective response from the 19 northern governors to tackle the region's high birth rate.

Muftwang expressed concern that the growing population, coupled with inadequate infrastructure for human capital development, could exacerbate issues such as banditry and terrorism. He criticized the region’s elite for prioritizing education for their own children in elite schools, both locally and internationally, while neglecting the vast youth population at home. This neglect, he warned, leaves many young people vulnerable to criminal indoctrination and exploitation.

“We don’t have an option. At this point, we must take the bull by the horns,” Muftwang asserted, emphasizing the urgent need for comprehensive action. He called for greater parental responsibility in addressing the challenges associated with high birth rates and ensuring the well-being and development of children.

The governor also underscored the role of religious leaders in addressing these critical issues. He stressed that religion should not hinder societal progress but rather support efforts to address demographic and developmental challenges. “We must ensure that religion does not become a setback to society,” Muftwang stated.

As Northern Nigeria faces significant demographic pressures, Muftwang’s call for a united approach and proactive measures from regional leaders and stakeholders reflects a growing recognition of the need to address both the immediate and long-term implications of rapid population growth in the region.
