In a surprising twist of fate, Margaret Sjostedt, who now goes by Margaret Losinger, is poised to receive a $1 million retirement account from her ex-boyfriend, Jeffrey Rolison, due to an oversight dating back nearly 40 years.
The story begins in 1987 when Jeffrey Rolison, then in his early 20s, designated Margaret as the sole beneficiary of his work retirement account on a handwritten form. Despite their breakup two years later, Jeffrey never updated his beneficiary information. When he passed away in 2015, Margaret remained listed as the beneficiary.
Margaret and Jeffrey's relationship began in a park, and they moved together to Sullivan County, Pennsylvania. However, their relationship ended in 1989, and Margaret moved on with her life, marrying and having two children. Jeffrey, meanwhile, entered a new relationship with Mary Lou Murray, with whom he lived until their separation in 2014.
Jeffrey's unexpected death at the age of 59 left him without a spouse or children. His estate, including his $66,000 home, a collection of used BMWs, and his two cats, was left to be settled. Despite the existence of a new partner, Mary Lou, who had been living with Jeffrey, the court ruled that she was not entitled to the funds or property due to the outdated beneficiary designation.
Jeffrey's brothers, upon discovering Margaret's claim to the retirement money, challenged it in federal court against P&G. Brian Rolison, Jeffrey's brother and a mechanic, expressed their shock at the situation, stating, "We were shocked."
As the legal battle continues, Margaret Losinger is set to inherit the $1 million retirement account, highlighting the importance of regularly updating beneficiary information to reflect changes in personal circumstances.
