Former Super Eagles Coach Jose Peseiro Applauds Gasperini’s Role in Ademola Lookman’s Rise

Former Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro has commended Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini for his pivotal role in Ademola Lookman’s stellar form this year.

The 27-year-old forward has delivered outstanding performances for both club and country, emerging as one of Nigeria's standout players at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and playing a crucial role in Atalanta’s UEFA Europa League triumph. Notably, Lookman netted a hat-trick in the final against Bayer Leverkusen, solidifying his reputation as a top talent.

Speaking to Sportitalia, Peseiro highlighted Gasperini’s influence in unlocking Lookman’s potential by granting him the freedom to express his creativity on the pitch.

“I think giving Lookman the freedom to move around has allowed him to show his quality, both in terms of decision-making and execution,” Peseiro said.

He also emphasized the supportive environment at Atalanta as a key factor in Lookman’s growth as a player.

“Of course, the club and Gasperini have provided Lookman with the environment to grow as a player in all aspects,” Peseiro added.

Lookman’s efforts culminated in his recognition as Africa’s Best Player at the 2024 CAF Awards held in Marrakech, Morocco. Peseiro praised the player’s accomplishments, describing the award as a well-deserved testament to his exceptional performances for both Atalanta and Nigeria.

“Lookman’s victory is deserved given his performances both for Atalanta, his club, and for his country, Nigeria,” Peseiro concluded.

The accolade adds to what has been a remarkable year for Lookman, whose contributions on the field have not only brought success to Atalanta but also boosted Nigeria’s hopes on the international stage.
