According to police, the shooters split up - with one opening fire from behind the crowd. And when the panicked crowd rushed for cover inside, the other shooter was posuitioned to pick them off one-by-one, as they struggled to squeeze through the single door.
“They funneled them onto the porch and then just lit them up,” Chris Taylor, an assistant special agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “It was like a military (operation), like when I was in the Marines. That’s totally what it looked like.”
Siblings Jerry Michael Shelton, 35, Brittany Powell, 27, and Chanetta Powell, 25, and their cousins Tina Shelton, 37, and Shada Mahone, 26, died in the massacre in the Wilkinburg backyard. Chanetta Powell was eight months pregnant. Police ruled her unborn baby's death a homicide.
Three other people at the cookout were injured during the brutal attack. Two men remain in critical condition and a woman was treated and released.
Police have not yet released a motive for the massacre.
