Battle of Authority: Kanu Pushes for DSS Boss' Arrest Over Court Defiance

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, has called on the Abuja Federal High Court to imprison the Director General of the Department of State Services, DSS, Yusuf Bichi, for his failure to comply with the court's ruling regarding visitation rights.

On May 20, 2024, the Abuja Federal High Court issued an order modifying the conditions of visitation for Kanu while in the DSS detention facility.

The court ordered that Kanu should be allowed visitation three days a week and provided with a safe and clean room for defense preparation, along with his legal team of up to five members. They were also to be allowed necessary facilities for defense preparation and note-taking.

However, Kanu's Lead Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, notified the Abuja Federal High Court that the DSS Director General had failed to comply with the court orders. In a notice titled "Notice to show cause why an order of committal should not be made," forwarded to DAILY POST on Monday, Ejimakor highlighted the DSS boss's refusal to obey the court's orders despite being served.

The notice stated that Kanu would apply to the court for an order for Bichi's committal to prison for disobeying the court's order. It outlined several instances of non-compliance, including the denial of writing materials for note-taking during visitations, failure to comply with the three-day per week visitation order, and refusal to provide a safe and clean room for defense preparation.

Additionally, the notice highlighted other acts of non-compliance, such as interference with legal documents, refusal of certain visitors critical to defense preparation, and failure to rectify actions even after being served with a Notice of Consequences of Disobedience to Court.

Bichi and the Federal Government were named as respondents in the notice, and they were required to attend the court to show cause why an order for committal should not be made against Bichi.
