In a shocking revelation, Ambassador Ibrahim Adamu Lamuwa, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has been accused of sexually harassing a female staff member. The allegation was brought to light by Mrs. Simisola Fajemirokun Ajayi, a married employee of the ministry, who filed a formal petition to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar. Represented by her lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), Mrs. Ajayi is calling for a thorough investigation into Ambassador Lamuwa's conduct.
The petition, dated May 29, 2024, and titled "Request For An Investigation Of Amb. Ibrahim Lamuwa's Conducts Of Sexual Harassment At The Place Of Work, Abuse Of Office, Official Intimidation And Discrimination," outlines numerous instances of alleged harassment. It was signed by Adebayo A. Oniyelu LP on behalf of Falana & Falana's law firm.
Mrs. Ajayi recounts disturbing encounters with Ambassador Lamuwa, including an incident on October 7, 2023, during a policy retreat where he allegedly made inappropriate advances, suggesting she join him in his hotel room. Another notable incident occurred on November 10, 2023, when Lamuwa purportedly invited her on a trip to Hong Kong, insinuating that her life would "never remain the same" after the trip. These advances were reportedly coupled with inappropriate physical contact and coercive behavior.
Despite previous interventions by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the harassment allegedly resumed in May 2024, creating a hostile work environment not only for Mrs. Ajayi but for other staff members as well. The petition highlights that multiple female employees have reported similar experiences of harassment, intimidation, and threats of professional repercussions for rejecting Lamuwa's advances.
Mrs. Ajayi's petition urges the Minister to take disciplinary action against Ambassador Lamuwa to set a precedent and deter future misconduct. It underscores the importance of upholding ethical standards and maintaining a safe workplace free from harassment and abuse of power.
As this story develops, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs faces increasing pressure to address these serious allegations and ensure justice for the affected employees.
