Charting a New Course: Owerri Zone's Quest for Imo State Governorship

A new development in Imo State's political landscape has emerged as the Owerri Zone Peoples Mandate (OWZOPEM), a newly formed political group, convened over the weekend to address the contentious issue of which zone, between Okigwe and Owerri, will produce the next Governor after the Orlu Zone. Led by Prof. Vitalis Orikeze Ajumbe and Capt. David Mbamara, designated as Chairman, the group aims to unify Owerri Zone's political aspirations.

During their inaugural meeting in Owerri, held on Saturday, June 29, the group outlined several key objectives. They resolved to establish a committee tasked with engaging Okigwe Zone through the Okigwe Global Elders Forum and Orlu Zone through the Orlu Political Consultative Assembly (OPOCA) to mitigate conflicting interests in the quest to secure the Governorship position.

Additionally, OWZOPEM committed to communicating with the people of Ohaji/Egbema regarding their stance on remaining within Imo State amidst discussions about creating Orlu State. The group expressed appreciation for Governor Hope Uzodinma's administration and his support for Owerri Zone's bid to produce the next Governor.

Capt. Mbamara emphasized the historical marginalization of Owerri Zone in gubernatorial elections since Nigeria's return to democratic rule in 1999, citing a need for solidarity within the zone to rectify this disparity. Prof. Ajumbe underscored the group's openness to ideas and collaboration across zones to bolster Owerri Zone's chances in upcoming elections without jeopardizing its political future.

The gathering, attended by various political stakeholders from Owerri Zone, marked a pivotal step towards consolidating support and strategizing for future political endeavors in the state.
