The Chilling Case of Tyler Hadley: The Teen Who Killed His Parents and Threw a Party

On July 16, 2011, 17-year-old Tyler Hadley brutally murdered his parents, Blake and Mary-Jo Hadley, in their Port St. Lucie, Florida home — then hosted a party while their bodies lay hidden in the master bedroom.

Armed with a claw hammer, Hadley struck his mother from behind while she sat at a computer. His father rushed in, horrified, asking “Why?” Hadley chillingly replied, “Why the f--- not?” Entering what he later described as a dissociative “psychotic state,” he kept swinging as his parents screamed and pleaded for their lives.

After the murders, Hadley dragged their bodies into the bedroom, covered them with household items, locked the family dog in a closet, hid cell phones, and spent nearly three hours cleaning up blood. That evening, he posted on Facebook: “Party at my crib tonight… maybe.” More than 60 teens showed up, most unaware of the crime.

Some guests noticed a strange smell or spotted blood around the house. At one point, Hadley confided in his best friend, Michael Mandell, and showed him the bodies. Mandell alerted police, who arrived the next morning, found the bodies, and arrested Hadley on the spot.

In a 2024 Court TV interview, Hadley claimed the idea began as a dark joke with friends and that he had been fixated on the thought for weeks. Prosecutors later revealed he had told others about his plan in advance, even saying he wanted to throw a party afterward because it had “never been done before.”

In 2014, Hadley pleaded no contest to two counts of first-degree murder and was sentenced to two consecutive life terms without parole. The judge called the killings “brutal, heinous, and premeditated.” In prison, Hadley reportedly nicknamed himself “Hammer Boy” and signed autographs for other inmates.

Now 31, Hadley admits he still doesn’t fully understand why he did it. He will be eligible for a sentencing review in 2039.
