Edo State Assembly Speaker Expels Deputy Majority Leader for Dress Code Violation

On Wednesday, the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, ordered the Deputy Majority Leader, Natasha Osawaru, to leave the plenary session due to improper dressing and wearing dark glasses.

Natasha Osawaru, representing Egor Constituency and granddaughter of Benin billionaire Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, was called out for her attire by Nicholas Asonsere, the member representing Ikpoba Okha Constituency. Asonsere noted that her mode of dressing violated the House's rules.

“This hallowed chamber is a sacred place. We cannot continue to accept or allow anyone to bring it into disrepute," Asonsere stated. "We have tolerated enough of the attitude and behavior of some honorable members. If we do not correct this now, it will set a precedent for others to follow, both now and in the future."

He continued, “Mr. Speaker, with your permission, I want to highlight some sections and subsections of our rules. We have a guiding document, often referred to as the Bible of the Edo State House of Assembly. Any member who violates these rules is subject to punishment.”

Speaker Agbebaku, in enforcing the rules, stated, “Improper dressing and wearing dark glasses are not permitted in this House. This is in accordance with the House rules, not my personal decision. So, let us always comply with these rules.”
