Israeli Forces Kill Gaza Journalist Holding Hostages: Rescue Operation Triggers Controversy

A Gaza journalist, who contributed to Al Jazeera and worked as a spokesman for the Hamas-run labor ministry, was holding three hostages in his home with his family before Israeli commandos killed him during a rescue operation on Saturday, June 8, according to the Israeli military.

Abdallah Aljamal, also known for his writings for the Palestine Chronicle, was killed when special forces soldiers stormed his central Gaza home and rescued hostages Almog Meir Jan, 21, Andri Kozlov, 27, and Shlomi Ziv, 41, the Israeli military reported.

Initially reported by Rami Abdu, the head of the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, Aljamal's death was depicted as a result of an IDF raid that claimed the lives of him and several family members. However, the IDF confirmed Aljamal's involvement in holding hostages but made no mention of the fate of his relatives.

“This is further proof that the Hamas terrorist organization uses the civilian population as a human shield,” the IDF stated.

While Aljamal previously contributed to Al Jazeera in 2019, the Qatar-based outlet clarified that he was never an employee. Before his death, he was actively reporting for the Palestine Chronicle, focusing on the situation in Nuseirat, where he resided, and where Israeli intelligence identified the hostages' location.

The Palestine Chronicle, a non-profit organization based in Washington State, confirmed Aljamal's contributions to their news outlet but made no mention of his involvement in the hostage situation.

In addition to the three men, Israeli forces also rescued Noa Argamani, the 26-year-old Israeli woman who gained notoriety as the victim of the Oct. 7 terrorist attack on the Jewish state.
