The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, highlighted that the shortfall of 30,000 medical professionals stems from the mass exodus of skilled workers seeking opportunities abroad. This migration trend has significantly impacted the health sector's manpower availability.
Speaking at the Lagos State University College of Medicine's induction ceremony for its 18th batch of graduating medical doctors and 8th batch of dental surgeons on Thursday, June 13, Abayomi urged the new inductees to pursue specialization in various fields and contribute to enhancing Nigeria's healthcare sector.
He emphasized, "We need to initiate change, starting from this graduation. Lagos currently faces a deficit of approximately 30,000 medical professionals."
Acknowledging the allure of migrating abroad, Abayomi encouraged graduates to consider the option of 'japa' (relocation) while still making a positive impact locally. He urged them to leverage their skills to improve healthcare in Nigeria and even return after gaining experience abroad to further contribute to the nation's development.
