The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Ogun State announced the recovery of significant quantities of illegal substances over the past five months, including 3.33 tonnes of cannabis sativa, 10.949 kg of psychotropic substances, 0.017 kg of cocaine, and 227.0 liters of skuchies.

Commander of Narcotics, Tijjani Rabe, disclosed these details during a press conference at the Command’s headquarters in Abeokuta, held in conjunction with the 2024 United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. Additionally, the agency recovered 11.0 liters of codeine and 0.129 kg of methamphetamine.

Rabe reported that the agency arrested 117 male and 30 female suspects, securing 86 convictions in the process.

"From January to May 2024, we seized 3.33 tonnes of cannabis sativa, 10.949 kg of psychotropic substances, 0.017 kg of cocaine, 227.0 liters of skuchies, 11.0 liters of codeine, and 0.129 kg of methamphetamine. We arrested 117 male suspects and 30 female suspects, totaling 147 arrests. We have charged 71 cases, secured 86 convictions, and have 174 pending cases. We also provided brief interventions to 112 clients, including 5 females and 107 males," Rabe said.

Regarding the year's celebration, Rabe explained that the global event, observed on June 26th, is themed, 'The Evidence Is Clear, Invest In Prevention.' He emphasized that the aim is to bolster efforts towards a world free of drug abuse and its associated problems.

Rabe stressed the importance of prevention-focused strategies to reduce illicit drug use, particularly among youth who are susceptible to peer pressure.

"Families, schools, religious organizations, and professional bodies need to invest in prevention to curb activities leading to illicit drug use. This theme supports our drug control initiatives, such as the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA), which targets schools, community leaders, religious organizations, and political leaders to enhance the well-being of Ogun State residents," he added.
