A nursing mother has died after allegedly being shot by a neighbor during a dispute over a solar light debt in Ogun State.
The deceased's husband, Dauda Jolaosho, a resident of Alako Nla village along Kobape Road in Abeokuta, claims that his neighbor, Saheed Olawale, shot and killed his wife. Jolaosho, a 44-year-old fish farmer, recounted the tragic incident, revealing that he survived a gunshot wound to his arm while his wife died instantly.
Jolaosho explained that the incident occurred on April 24, 2024, leaving him devastated as his wife left behind eight-month-old twins and three other children aged 13, 10, and 5.
He narrated, "The trouble started on April 23, 2024. I was about to go out when representatives from the company we bought solar lights from came to my house. We had purchased these lights in March last year, made an initial deposit of N10,000, and were paying N1,150 weekly towards a total cost of around N67,000. I had only N3,000 left to pay."
The company representatives mentioned they were also checking on Olawale, known locally as Komaye, who had stopped making payments and was unresponsive to their calls. They decided to reclaim his solar light and left a contact number for him to reach them.
When Olawale returned from work and discovered his solar light was taken, he confronted Jolaosho angrily and refused to listen to his explanation. The next morning, Olawale allegedly came to Jolaosho’s house, took his phone, and left. He returned with a local gun, and despite Jolaosho’s wife begging on her knees, Olawale pulled the trigger, hitting Jolaosho in the arm. Tragically, Jolaosho's wife, his partner of almost 18 years, was killed.
The incident was first reported at Kemta Police Station in Abeokuta before being transferred to the Ogun State Police Command in Eleweran, Abeokuta. Jolaosho’s wife was buried on Tuesday at Alako Nla, Abeokuta.
Jolaosho has called for justice for his wife and urged the Ogun State government and fellow Nigerians to assist in caring for his five children.
Confirming the incident, CSP Wale Famobuwa, the Divisional Police Officer of Kemta, stated, "The incident was reported to our station between 12 and 2 pm that day. The husband of the deceased was involved in a fight with the alleged killer. It was reported that the husband threatened to stone Olawale, who then warned him not to do so, or he would shoot him. Jolaosho went ahead to stone Olawale, who then shot at him and his wife, who was trying to mediate."
The police have stated that Olawale is still at large and have vowed to bring him to justice.
