A group of 35 lawmakers, known as the Reformers, has proposed significant changes to the 1999 Constitution, including a six-year single term for the President and governors. The lawmakers are also advocating for the introduction of two vice presidents, one from the southern part and one from the northern part of Nigeria.
Another major proposal from the group is the rotation of the Presidency among the six geopolitical zones and the holding of all elections on the same day.
During a press briefing at the National Assembly on Monday, the lawmakers, led by Ikenga Ugochinyere, announced that they have drafted 50 proposed amendments, with six of the bills already listed on the House floor.
“Constitutional Amendment to provide that the President and the 1st Vice President shall come from the same part of the country (north or south) and the 1st Vice President shall become President whenever the President becomes incapacitated, i.e., V.P. (Succession), V.P. (Administration and Economy),” Ugochinyere said.
Ugochinyere emphasized that the current Constitution has significant gaps that need to be addressed.
