Surfing Legend Tamayo Perry Fatally Attacked by Shark Off Oahu Coast

Tamayo Perry, a renowned surfer who appeared in the film "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," has tragically died following a shark attack while surfing near Oahu's shores.

The 49-year-old Perry was discovered off Mālaekahana Beach on Oahu's North Shore by local surfers, missing an arm and a leg, as reported by Stab Magazine. First responders indicated that he had likely suffered multiple shark bites.

Lifeguards transported Perry to shore via jetski, where paramedics pronounced him dead, according to officials at a news conference. In response to the attack, Ocean Safety personnel issued shark warnings in the area.

Perry began surfing at the age of 12, and by his teenage years, he was recognized as a promising local talent, often borrowing surfboards due to a lack of sponsors, according to The Encyclopedia of Surfing.

By 1997, Perry, known for his wiry build and goofy-foot stance, had developed a distinctive tube riding style influenced by his idols, Gerry Lopez and Tom Carroll, both legendary Pipeline surfers.

In 1999, Perry won the prestigious Pipeline Masters, and by 2005, he was celebrated as one of the most prominent surfers at Pipeline, noted for his smile and relaxed demeanor in the face of towering waves.

Perry's charisma and surfing prowess also earned him roles in the 2002 film "Blue Crush," the TV series "Lost," "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," and "Hawaii Five-0."
