Activist lawyer Femi Falana has firmly stated that no government threats or opposition from any quarters will prevent the nationwide protests scheduled to commence on August 1. Falana made this assertion in response to recent criticisms and condemnations from various organizations and even the presidency regarding the planned demonstrations.
In an interview on Channels TV on Tuesday, Falana called on the Federal Government to adopt a more constructive approach by identifying and engaging with the protest organizers. He emphasized that merely issuing threats would not be effective in halting the movement. Instead, he suggested that the government should learn from past experiences, such as the 2020 #EndSARS protests, and seek to engage in meaningful dialogue with the protest leaders.
Falana remarked, “They have a way of contacting themselves, and I think the government can draw some lessons from that 2020 (#EndSARS) experience. Identify those who are planning the protest and then engage with them productively.” He continued, “Threats will not work. In fact, the actions of the government often have a way of popularizing such protests.”
He criticized the government’s approach, stating that issuing warnings and threats only serves to amplify the issues and garner more public support for the protests. Falana urged the government to address the underlying demands raised by the protest organizers, rather than attempting to suppress them through intimidation.
The planned protests are aimed at highlighting and addressing the prevailing hardships faced by citizens. Falana's comments underscore the importance of dialogue and engagement in addressing public grievances and avoiding unnecessary escalation of conflicts.
