Appeal Court Increases Sentence for Convicted Sex Offender Who Fled to Nigeria

In a recent ruling, England's Court of Appeal has significantly increased the prison sentence for Kelechukwu Orji, a 48-year-old man convicted of multiple sex crimes. Orji, who fled to Nigeria following his conviction, had originally been sentenced in absentia by a Crown Court in Lewes on February 21, 2024.

Orji's initial convictions included two counts of rape, one count of attempted rape, one count of assault by penetration, and one count of sexual assault. The trial judge had sentenced him to a total of ten years, with all sentences running concurrently. Dissatisfied with what was perceived as a lenient punishment, Solicitor General Robert Courts appealed the decision under the Criminal Justice Act 1988.

On June 13, 2024, the Court of Appeal responded by extending Orji's sentence from ten to fifteen years. The court criticized the original judgment for not adequately reflecting the severity of his crimes. The judges emphasized that Orji’s purported good character was overshadowed by the gravity of his offenses, which involved a prolonged and brutal campaign of sexual abuse against his victim, identified as “AB.”

AB, a young woman from Nigeria who had come to the UK to work for Orji’s family, endured repeated assaults over several weeks. Despite Orji's efforts to evade justice by fleeing to Nigeria, the appeal court's decision aims to ensure that the severity of his crimes is appropriately reflected and maintains public confidence in the judicial system.

Orji's flight to Nigeria has complicated his case further, as he remains at large while facing a significantly increased prison term if apprehended. The case continues to draw attention to the challenges of prosecuting and sentencing high-profile fugitives.
