BREAKING NEWS: Veteran Nigerian Singer Onyeka Onwenu Passes Away at 72

 

Veteran Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress Onyeka Onwenu has died at the age of 72. According to reports, Onwenu passed away on Tuesday night following a performance at an event in Banana Island, Lagos. She was confirmed dead at a hospital in Victoria Island after reportedly collapsing post-performance.

The legendary artist was performing at the birthday celebration of Stella Okoli, the founder of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, when the incident occurred. Her family has yet to issue an official statement confirming her death.

Born in 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria, Onyeka Onwenu began her music career in the early 1980s, debuting with the album For the Love of You in 1981. Over the years, she released several influential albums and singles, including the widely recognized track "One Love."

In addition to her music career, Onwenu made significant contributions to Nollywood, acting in numerous films and earning accolades for her performances. Her impact on Nigerian music and film has been profound, establishing her as a pioneering figure in the industry.

Onwenu was also active in public service. She served as Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture in 2013 and later as the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development starting in 2016. Her contributions to Nigerian society were honored with the National Honors of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011, among other recognitions as one of Nigeria's most influential women.
