Caning Punishment in Aceh: Four Men Penalized for Alcohol Consumption

Four men received harsh corporal punishment by being caned 42 times for violating Sharia law by consuming alcohol on Sumatra Island in Indonesia.

An executor administered the caning in front of Islamic court officials while onlookers gathered on Monday, July 1.

Two of the men wore white tunics, and the other two were dressed in red tops with the district attorney's office's name before they each received their designated number of lashes.

The Acehnese men, identified as M. Fais Akbar, Aulia Syahputra, Yusdi, and Cukri Ramadhan, were punished with 19 to 42 lashes for the offense of consuming 'khamar,' or alcohol, under Sharia law. A police officer overseeing the punishments conducted health checks with a medical team before proceeding.

During the caning, the procedure paused momentarily for one of the men who experienced pain after 10 lashes. Medical staff provided assistance and ensured he was fit to continue before the punishment resumed.

"After completing the caning punishment today for four individuals convicted of consuming alcohol, known as khamar, the Banda Aceh District Prosecutor's Office confirms the execution," stated the Head of the Prosecutor's Office.
