Kaduna Citizens Watch Calls for Investigation of Former Governor El-Rufai Over Alleged Financial Mismanagement

Nigeria’s anti-corruption agencies, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), have received petitions from the Kaduna Citizens Watch for Good Governance against the immediate past governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El-Rufai.

Victor Duniya, the group's chairman, announced this during a press briefing on Wednesday in Kaduna.

Duniya revealed that the petitions target El-Rufai and several members of his cabinet, following a report by the State House of Assembly Ad-hoc Committee on the sourcing and usage of domestic loans from May 29, 2015, to May 29, 2023.

The petitions call for immediate investigations, arrests, and prosecutions of El-Rufai and his appointees for their alleged involvement in financial mismanagement, embezzlement, and other illegal activities highlighted in the report.

Duniya emphasized that holding the former governor and his associates accountable would serve as a deterrent to other public officials from looting public funds with impunity.

The group urged the anti-graft agencies to act promptly, reflecting the public’s demand for accountability and justice without delay.

“Their looting has placed the state on a financial tightrope and hampered the robust performance of successive governments. Their actions have discouraged people from having faith in our democratic experiment,” Duniya added.
