18-year-old Lille defender Leny Yoro has officially joined Manchester United in a deal valued at over £59.1 million. The Old Trafford club secured Yoro's signature, overcoming competition from Real Madrid and Liverpool.
Although Real Madrid was reportedly Yoro’s preferred destination, Manchester United successfully persuaded the Frenchman to join their ranks. The transfer includes an initial fee of £52.2 million, with potential add-ons worth £7 million.
Widely regarded as one of the most promising teenage defenders, Yoro has signed a five-year contract with Manchester United, with an option to extend for an additional 12 months.
“Signing for a club with the stature and ambition of Manchester United so early in my career is an incredible honour,” Yoro stated. “From my first conversations with the club, they laid out a clear plan for my development in Manchester and showed a lot of care for me and my family. I know about the history of young players at Manchester United and believe it is the perfect place to reach my potential and achieve my ambitions alongside my new teammates. I cannot wait to get started.”
Manchester United's sporting director, Dan Ashworth, expressed his excitement about the signing, saying, “Leny is one of the most exciting young defenders in world football; he possesses every attribute needed to develop into a top-class centre-back. Having had such an excellent start to his career, we are eager to support him in reaching his immense potential here at Manchester United. This club has a fantastic record of developing young players, whether homegrown or brought in from elsewhere, and providing them with the necessary guidance, time, and patience to grow and flourish. Under Erik ten Hag and our excellent staff, we will ensure that Leny has the perfect platform to achieve the success that everyone across the club is aiming for.”
Yoro made 41 appearances for Lille in all competitions last season, scoring three goals. His transfer to Manchester United makes him the third most expensive teenage signing in the Premier League.
