Netherlands Faces Backlash Over Inclusion of Convicted Rapist in Paris Olympics Volleyball Team

 

The Netherlands is facing criticism from women's advocacy groups after including Steven van de Velde, a convicted rapist, in its volleyball squad for the Paris Olympics. Van de Velde was sentenced to four years in prison in the UK in 2016 for the rape of a 12-year-old girl in 2014. Following part of his sentence served in Britain, he was transferred to the Netherlands, where his sentence was adjusted to comply with Dutch legal norms.

Despite his conviction, van de Velde resumed competing in beach volleyball in 2017 and was recently named to the Dutch Olympic team. This decision has sparked significant dismay among some women’s rights advocates.

In response to the backlash, the Dutch Olympic Committee has taken steps to address concerns. The committee, in collaboration with van de Velde and his playing partner Matthew Immers, has arranged for van de Velde to stay in alternative accommodation in Paris. Additionally, they have imposed a media ban on him to prevent further controversy.
