Ohio State Senator George Lang recently apologized after suggesting a potential civil war if Donald Trump does not win the upcoming presidential election. Lang made the controversial comment during a speech introducing JD Vance, Trump’s vice-presidential candidate, at Vance’s former high school in Middletown, Ohio.
Lang’s remarks included, “I’m afraid if we lose this one, it’s going to take a civil war to save the country, and it will be saved,” and praised groups like “Bikers for Trump” as allies. His speech, which also featured a dramatic chant of “fight, fight, fight,” drew parallels to Trump’s rhetoric and elicited a range of reactions.
Following backlash, Lang issued an apology, expressing regret for his divisive language. He acknowledged the sensitivity of the moment, especially after the recent assassination attempt on Trump. Lang emphasized the need for careful communication in political discourse.
President Joe Biden criticized Lang’s comments, linking them to broader concerns about political violence and urging a reduction in inflammatory rhetoric. Biden’s former campaign, now the Harris for President campaign, attributed Lang’s comments to the broader divisive tone set by Trump and Vance’s campaign
