Paris Faces Unprecedented Security Measures for the Olympics

As Paris prepares for the Olympics, security has reached new heights, creating a challenging environment for locals and visitors alike. On the Petit Pont linking the Seine’s left bank to Île de la Cité, Clint Little from Illinois expressed frustration at the extensive security measures obstructing views of Notre Dame. "It’s been a bit disappointing," said Little, who found the barriers and restricted zones overwhelming.

Paris's security approach for the Games contrasts sharply with London 2012, with extensive measures now in place around the city's core attractions. The city is encircled by 44,000 metal barriers, restricting access to the Seine banks, where spectators will watch the opening ceremony from boats. Only those with QR codes are permitted access, drawing criticism from activist group Saccage 2024, which labels the event as the first “QR code Olympic Games.”

The city's infrastructure is also affected, with numerous Métro stations near key locations closed and traffic heavily restricted. The security force comprises 30,000 police and gendarmes daily, rising to 45,000 for the opening ceremony, supported by 20,000 private security guards and 10,000 soldiers. A substantial military base in Bois de Vincennes and additional accommodations in hotels and schools underscore the scale of the operation.

France's interior minister, Gérald Darmanin, has emphasized the importance of showcasing a positive image of France during this global event. However, the extensive security has sparked concern and inconvenience among Parisians and tourists. Nearly 40% of French people are indifferent to the Olympics, and 37% hold negative views, exacerbated by the closure of many local businesses and the overall quiet in affected areas.

Peter and Roxana Feldmann, residents near Île de la Cité, plan to leave for New York before the opening ceremony, noting the unusual emptiness of the city. Despite no specific threats identified by French intelligence, there is heightened vigilance against potential risks, including domestic threats and protests.

The security measures, while comprehensive, are designed to ensure safety and allow the Games to proceed smoothly. Darmanin remains confident that these measures will effectively manage risks and highlight the Games' focus on celebration and sportsmanship.
