In a devastating incident in Kawuri village, Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State, at least 19 civilians have been killed and numerous others injured in a suicide attack. The village, located approximately 50 kilometers from Maiduguri on the Maiduguri-Konduga-Bama Road, was targeted late yesterday evening.
This attack follows a recent tragedy where Shettima Mustapha, an accountant with the Local Education Authority in Damboa Local Government Area, was killed, and several others injured when their vehicle struck an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on the Maiduguri-Damboa-Biu federal highway. The violence also echoes a previous incident about a month ago, when multiple suicide bombings in Gwoza Local Government Area resulted in 32 deaths and over 100 injuries.
In the past week, violence has escalated further with an attack on a police station in Jakana, near Maiduguri. The assault led to the deaths of a police driver and his companion, the destruction of two security patrol vehicles, and the theft of police motorcycles, arms, and ammunition.
The recent blast in Kawuri occurred around 8 p.m. at a local mini market. The explosion has caused significant damage, leaving the community in turmoil as residents scramble for safety. Injured individuals have been transported to an undisclosed hospital in Maiduguri for treatment.
Security agencies have issued warnings to the public, advising caution and vigilance amid the rising violence. Despite attempts to confirm details with the Police Public Relations Officer, Kenneth Daso, no official statement has been received. A local stakeholder in Kawuri, who requested anonymity, has urged the government and security forces to intensify efforts to address the insurgency and protect civilians.
