In a recent Fox News interview, former President Donald Trump defended Ohio Senator JD Vance against backlash over past remarks he made about “childless cat ladies,” which have resurfaced following Vance’s selection as Trump’s running mate. Vance’s 2021 comments, which criticized Vice President Kamala Harris and other Democrats as “miserable” due to their lack of children, have drawn criticism from various quarters, with some strategists warning they could negatively impact Trump’s campaign.
Trump downplayed the controversy during the interview, asserting that Vance’s comments were a reflection of his personal values rather than an attack on individuals without families. “He grew up in a very interesting family situation, and he feels family is good. And I don’t think there’s anything wrong in saying that,” Trump remarked.
The former president also clarified his stance on family life, noting that he does not hold a higher regard for individuals based solely on their family status. “You know, you don’t meet the right person, or you don’t meet any person. But you’re just as good, in many cases, a lot better than a person that’s in a family situation,” Trump stated.
In other news, Trump addressed the recent assassination attempt during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. The FBI is investigating the incident, and Trump confirmed he would cooperate with the agency. Special Agent Kevin Rojek reported that the shooter, Thomas Crooks, was identified as suspicious prior to the attack and was observed carrying a backpack and using a rangefinder before the shooting occurred.
The FBI’s investigation has yet to reveal Crooks’s motive, although his online searches indicated an interest in prior mass shootings and other violent events. Trump, who was injured during the attack, emphasized that he would continue to hold outdoor rallies despite security concerns and the recommendations of the Secret Service.
Regarding the upcoming debate with Kamala Harris, Trump remained non-committal. While he suggested he might participate, he also hinted at the possibility of opting out, stating, “I’ll probably end up debating. But I can also make a case for not doing it.”
As Trump navigates these challenges, his campaign strategy continues to evolve amidst scrutiny and high-stakes political maneuvering.
