NBA Minna Calls for Independent Inquiry into Alleged Protester Killings in Niger State

The Minna branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called for the formation of an independent panel to probe the reported deaths of six protesters in Suleja, Niger State. This call follows allegations that security forces used excessive force during recent nationwide demonstrations against economic hardship.

In a statement issued on August 3, Isyaku Barau, Chairman of the Minna NBA branch, condemned the violence that reportedly led to the fatalities. Barau described the situation as chaotic and strongly criticized security agencies for their handling of the protests.

“We condemn in strong terms the violent clashes that resulted in the deaths of six protesters by security personnel in the Suleja area,” Barau stated. He emphasized the need for an independent investigation to ensure accountability and transparency in the handling of the situation.

The NBA's statement also expressed appreciation for the people of Niger State's decision to largely abstain from the nationwide protests against hunger and economic challenges. Barau highlighted that prior to the protests, NBA President Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau had acknowledged the severe economic difficulties facing many Nigerians and had expressed concern about the potential for such protests to turn violent.

Barau noted that Maikyau had urged caution, recognizing that past peaceful protests in Nigeria have often been marred by violence and disruption. In response, the NBA President had directed all branches to establish Situation Monitoring Committees to oversee the protests and ensure they remain peaceful.

In Minna, a ten-member committee led by the branch’s Vice Chairman, Mohammed Abugi, has been set up. This committee is tasked with collaborating with security forces to safeguard peaceful protesters, monitoring for human rights abuses, documenting any incidents, and providing legal support as needed.

While the NBA Minna branch supports the constitutional right to protest, it has condemned any acts of violence, looting, and property destruction that have occurred under the guise of protests. The statement also referenced an attack on the Local Government Secretariat in Tafa, which the NBA condemned.

Barau further noted that the decision of many in Niger State to avoid participating in the protests is attributed to the positive impacts of local government initiatives aimed at urban renewal and improving food security, which are expected to address hunger issues in the state.

The NBA’s call for an independent inquiry underscores the organization’s commitment to upholding human rights and ensuring justice in the face of allegations of misconduct by security forces during the protests.
