Prof. Epiphany Azinge Appointed as 14th Asagba of Asaba

Professor Epiphany Azinge, a distinguished Law professor and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has been announced as the 14th Asagba (King) of Asaba in Delta State. The Asagba-in-Council made the official announcement on Sunday, recognizing Azinge, who holds the traditional title of Okilolo of Asaba, as the new king.

Azinge's selection was unanimously supported by the five Ebo’s (Quarters) of Asaba and the Iyagba quarters, leading to his confirmation by the ruling council. The Ochendo of Asaba, Chief Anthony Edozien, made the announcement on behalf of the Council.

Chief Edozien explained that the selection process adhered to the Traditional Rulers and Chiefs Edict of 1979, which is applicable in Delta State.

Azinge, who previously served as the Director General of the Nigeria Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS), emerged as the preferred candidate from a pool of 10 contenders for the royal stool. Among the contenders were notable figures such as Mr. Tony Ogugia Konwea, Prof. Emmanuel Onwuka, and Chief Chinedu Esealuka.

The appointment of Prof. Azinge follows the passing of the 13th Asagba of Asaba, the late Prof. Chike Edozien, who died on February 14, 2024.
