A Spanish YouTube chef, Daniel Sancho Bronchalo, has been sentenced to life imprisonment in Thailand after being found guilty of premeditated murder and dismemberment of his partner, Edwin Arrieta Arteaga, a Colombian plastic surgeon. The crime occurred on the Thai island of Koh Pha-ngan in August last year.
Sancho, a member of a well-known Spanish acting family, confessed to killing Arrieta, 44, and disposing of his body parts both on land and at sea. Initially, the Koh Samui provincial court sentenced him to death, but the punishment was reduced to life in prison due to his cooperation during the trial, according to Colonel Paisan Sangthep, deputy commander of the Surat Thani provincial police.
Sancho is the son of Rodolfo Sancho Aguirre, a famous Spanish actor, and Silvia Bronchalo, who is also an actress. Both parents, who are 49 years old, were present at the court hearing.
During his trial, Sancho claimed that he and Arrieta got into a fight after Arrieta allegedly attempted to sexually assault him. Sancho said Arrieta fell during the scuffle, hitting his head on a bathtub, which led to his death. Despite his plea of not guilty to premeditated murder, the court found him responsible for the crime.
In addition to the life sentence for murder, Sancho received a four-month sentence for concealing or damaging a body, which was reduced to two months after he admitted to the act. He was also sentenced to two years in prison for destroying Arrieta's passport, having pleaded not guilty to that charge as well.
The case, involving a violent death on a holiday island, connections to a celebrity family, and grisly details, gained significant attention in Spanish media. HBO even produced a Spanish-language documentary about the events.
The investigation began when trash collectors discovered a sack containing dismembered body parts, including a sawed-off pelvis and intestines, at a garbage dump. Shortly after the discovery, Sancho reported Arrieta missing, prompting police to gather evidence linking him to the crime. Authorities allege that Sancho planned the murder after Arrieta allegedly threatened to expose their relationship, which could have brought disgrace to Sancho and his family.
The high-profile case has captivated the public's attention due to its shocking nature and the involvement of prominent figures from the Spanish entertainment industry.
