The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has announced that 274 inmates are missing following the collapse of the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Maiduguri, Borno State, after severe flooding caused by the collapse of the Alau Dam.
Umar Abubakar, the NCoS spokesperson, shared the news in a statement on Sunday, September 15, 2024. He explained that heavy rainfall led to the collapse of the dam, which triggered widespread flooding in Maiduguri, submerging large areas and displacing over a million residents. At least 30 people have been confirmed dead, with authorities fearing the number may rise as rescue efforts continue.
"The unfortunate incident has severely impacted the region, breaching the walls of the MSCC and the staff quarters," Abubakar said.
After evacuating inmates to a secure facility with help from other security agencies, officials found that 281 inmates had escaped. So far, seven have been recaptured, and efforts are underway to track down the remaining 274.
Abubakar assured the public that the correctional service has the necessary details and biometric information of the escaped inmates. He emphasized that the NCoS is working closely with other security agencies to recapture the fleeing prisoners and ensure public safety.
"Both covert and overt measures are being deployed to locate the escapees," Abubakar stated, adding that the public's safety is not at risk despite the situation.
