Alleged Trump Assassin Once Rejected as “Wack Job” by Ukrainian Fighters

Ryan Wesley Routh, the man accused of plotting to assassinate former U.S. President Donald Trump, reportedly attempted to join the Ukrainian war effort last year but was swiftly turned away by seasoned fighters who deemed him “off” and unfit for combat.

According to a report from the NY Post, Routh, 58, traveled to Ukraine in March 2023, hoping to help fight against Russian forces despite having no military experience. However, foreign fighters on the ground quickly rejected him, branding him a "crazy idiot" and labeling his presence as disruptive.

An American fighting in Ukraine, who chose to remain anonymous, explained to the NY Post, "There are people like that who show up desperate to help and be important. He was just one of those, but on the crazier end of things." Many foreign fighters reportedly identified Routh as someone more interested in fame than genuinely contributing to the war effort.

Routh’s behavior, including his alleged use of a GoPro, raised suspicions among volunteers. One fighter remarked that Routh represented a growing number of individuals flocking to Ukraine for personal recognition rather than out of genuine concern for the country’s fight for survival. "A lot of people here aren’t really here for Ukraine. They’re here to kind of be famous or live out a fantasy," the fighter said.

Routh initially tried to join the Ukrainian Foreign Legion, a unit that has recruited thousands of foreign volunteers, but was turned away due to his age and lack of battlefield expertise. In an interview with the Financial Times, he revealed that the legion had suggested he assist with recruitment instead.

Despite this rejection, Routh reportedly took it upon himself to act as a self-appointed recruiter. Some volunteers in Ukraine recalled encountering him during his stay and described him as "unbalanced and dangerous." In private chats shared with the NY Post, one volunteer mentioned that Routh had been involved in a dubious scheme to recruit fighters from Afghanistan to Ukraine.

Others remembered Routh’s return from Ukraine, as he sent a shirtless selfie, grinning on a beach with his girlfriend, to boast about his time overseas. "I remember Ryan well, but not fondly," a foreign volunteer shared.

Routh’s behavior in Ukraine, as described by those who met him, raises concerns about individuals using the war zone to pursue personal fantasies. A fighter noted that "anyone" can claim involvement in the conflict simply by stepping in front of a camera, further muddying the waters for those genuinely committed to the cause.
