The Uyo Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested five Chinese nationals suspected of engaging in illegal mining activities in Akwa Ibom State. The arrests took place in the Ndito-Eka-Iba village, Ibiono Local Government Area, following credible intelligence on the unlawful operations of foreign mining companies in the region.
According to a statement released by the EFCC on Sunday, September 15, 2024, the suspects were apprehended by the agency’s “Special Task Force on Illegal Mining.” The task force had been investigating reports of illegal mining activities in Eket and Ibiono Local Government Areas.
The arrested individuals include Zhon Qinping, who was detained on September 10, 2024, and Li Yi, Xie Bin, Chen Mou Zhou, and Chen Zeng, who were taken into custody on August 29, 2024. All five were caught at an illegal mining site where they were allegedly extracting ilmenite, a valuable titanium-iron oxide mineral.
The EFCC stated that the suspects will face legal charges once investigations are completed.
