The Federal Government has approved an increase in the monthly allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to N77,000, effective from July 2024. This decision aligns with the recently enacted National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.
In a statement released by Caroline Embu, the acting Director of Information and Public Relations for NYSC, the new allowance was confirmed through a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission, dated September 25, 2024, and signed by its chairman, Ekpo Nta.
Before this announcement, NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Y.D. Ahmed, had met with the commission's chairman to advocate for improved welfare for corps members. The statement noted that the NYSC leadership is grateful to the Federal Government for this timely increase, expressing hope that the raise will bring relief to corps members, enhance their morale, and motivate them to serve the nation more effectively.
Previously, the monthly allowance for NYSC members was N33,000.
