Former GOP Attorney General Alberto Gonzales Endorses Kamala Harris, Criticizes Trump

Former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, who served under President George W. Bush, has announced his decision to support Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential election, despite being a Republican. Gonzales made this statement in a Politico column, explaining his concerns about the possibility of Donald Trump returning to the White House.

Gonzales expressed deep concerns about Trump's actions, especially regarding his role in the events of January 6. He criticized Trump for failing to act during the Capitol attack, stating that Trump neglected his duty to protect Congress, law enforcement, and democracy itself. Gonzales noted that Trump watched the events unfold on television and chose not to intervene because it was against his interests.

Gonzales also highlighted Trump’s legal issues, including 34 state felony convictions, a civil financial judgment of libel related to sexual abuse, and ongoing federal election interference investigations. These, he said, demonstrate Trump's disregard for the rule of law.

Additionally, Gonzales pointed out that many former senior officials from Trump's administration, including his vice president, chief of staff, and defense secretary, no longer support him. He sees their refusal to endorse Trump as a significant statement about the former president's character.

In his column, Gonzales also called for the U.S. Supreme Court to adopt stricter ethics guidelines, reflecting ongoing concerns about the ethical standards of the justices.
